About holidays in Tideswell

Tideswell is a large ancient village in Derbyshire’s scenic Peak District, six miles from Buxton. Its alleyways and narrow lanes are an echo of the past, but it is also a thriving, modern community and a wonderful location for a self-catering family break.

Its parish church, the Church of St. John the Baptist, dates from the 14th century and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of the Peak. Walkers and climbers often frequent the local area. Tideswell Dale is a Wildlife Nature Reserve, offering a pleasant walk amongst some rare flowers. You can continue walking from here to Miller’s Dale, a valley which is a popular beauty spot.

The village is fortunate in being able to sustain its many shops and pubs. A scheme known as Taste Tideswell resulted in the setting up of a cookery school and nano-brewery where visitors are welcome to participate in food and drink classes.

Book a break to coincide with the festival

Tideswell Wakes Week occurs along with the village Well Dressing, an old Derbyshire tradition whereby village wells are decorated with twigs, flower petals and so on. This happens on the Saturday closest to St. John the Baptist Day in June. The week-long celebrations involve family entertainment, parades and carnivals, bringing a colourful spectacle to the village.

Tideswell Food Festival only began in 2011 but has already become a popular part of the events calendar. Celebrating local produce and artisan food is the name of the game. The 2012 festival involved cookery demonstrations, wine tasting, dance and live music. Hoping for an even bigger event, the organisers have announced May 4th as the date for the 2013 festival. Perhaps rent a holiday cottage or self-catering apartment in Tideswell to coincide with this event?

Lots to do in Tideswell for holiday fun

There is plenty to do in the evenings during your holiday. Tideswell Sports Complex provides various facilities for different sports plus a children’s obstacle course and playground and a BMX/skate park. For enthusiasts of stage drama, Tideswell Community Players is an amateur theatre group based in the village that likes to put on an ambitious programme of plays. Film lovers are catered for too, from September to April, when the volunteer-run Tideswell Cinema presents its season. The George Hotel is the venue for the screenings, which include mainstream, foreign language and classic films. Live screening of stage productions from London and other locations is a recent innovation for the group.

As you can see, there is more than enough to keep everyone entertained in Tideswell, but should you want the amenities of a larger town, nearby Buxton is a worthy destination for shopping, eating and attractions. Meanwhile, Tideswell punches above its weight and is a worthy holiday destination in Derbyshire.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Tideswell, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Derbyshire.
