What’s more, this town is just a few miles from some of south Devon’s best loved beaches making it an ideal holiday base for a family getaway. Taking its roots from Saxon times and possibly beyond, the town has a rich history and was the scene of fierce battles during the civil war in 1642 and 1643. Modbury has many sites of historic interest identified by plaques. Two worthy of mention are St. George’s Church with its tall dominating spire and the Exeter Inn that has origins dating back to the 14th century, later to become a popular meeting place of Royalists in the 17th century. Today these buildings sit side by side with an array of thriving shops, restaurants and galleries which can be a delight to visit on a self-catering break.
Off the beaten track and just 4 miles from Modbury is Wonwell beach and the Erme estuary. A lovely beauty spot where river meets sea, there are lots of pleasant walks and a dog friendly beach all year round. A couple of miles further is the delightful, award-winning beach at Bigbury on Sea. Lovely soft sand, dunes and safe bathing make this beach perfect for families. Just off the beach and reached by causeway at low tide, and ‘sea tractor’ at high tide, is the art deco island of Burgh. Bantham is another safe family beach near to Modbury that has a good reputation with families, fishers, surfers and kayakers. Further afield there are plenty of interesting towns to visit on a cottage break including the ever popular resorts of Torbay, the English Riviera, and Plymouth.
Lovers of wild, natural countryside may prefer to travel north from Modbury on to the semi-wilderness of Dartmoor. Many visitors including famous ones such as Steven Spielberg are inspired by the abundant beauty of Dartmoor National Park. With 450 square miles of open space, there is plenty to inspire you and you may even encounter wild ponies on your travels. Walking, cycling, climbing and kayaking are just some of the activities you can engage in, or you can just take it easy, enjoy the landscape and the hospitality of local pubs and restaurants.
