You could not be better located for a self-catering holiday in Devon than in the village of Stoodleigh. Based right in the heart of Devon, many of Devon’s top attractions are accessible for day trips. Exmoor National Park, the South Devon coast, the north Devon coast and Somerset are almost all around the same distance away and there are lots of interesting places in between. Very much a rural village with its roots firmly planted in agriculture, Stoodleigh sits 800 feet above sea level overlooking the Exe valley. This peaceful village could be an ideal choice for a country cottage break or rural retreat holiday.
About Cottage Breaks in Stoodleigh
The village is off the A396 Tiverton to Bampton road, across a bridge over the Exe and down a wonderful wooded and winding lane. There is an historic church and some fine houses with historical value. One such building is Stoodleigh Court a Gothic manor house now used for weddings and corporate events.
To the north of Stoodleigh are the coastal villages of Lynmouth and Lynton that can be reached by driving through quite a stretch of Exmoor. If the great outdoors are your passion then you’ll want to spend some time there. Miles of open moorland, forest and outstanding landscapes where communities and wildlife live side by side, that’s Exmoor National Park.
Or you could bypass Exmoor and head out to the lively seaside resort of Minehead. To the south via Tiverton, Minehead is one of Devon’s top seaside resorts. Near to the town, a popular tourist attraction is the Devon Railway Centre at Bickleigh. This is a fun day out especially for the kids who can get involved clipping tickets and waving flags to start the continuous train rides around the centre. As well as working trains there are static exhibitions, model railways, a model village and play areas. While at Bickleigh take a look at Bickleigh Bridge. From the 1960s this bridge was thought to be the inspiration for Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ while Paul Simon was staying at The Fisherman’s Cot nearby. Sadly the myth was dispelled during a TV interview with Art Garfunkel in 2003.
Further south from Stoodleigh are some lovely south and east Devon seaside resorts such as Exmouth, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline with sandy beaches, safe waters, and numerous attractions for all ages and tastes. And if you’re getting withdrawal symptoms after your trip to Exmoor then visit Dartmoor National Park for much more of the same.
