The village of Llanelltyd can be found in Gwynedd in north Wales, just north of the market town of Dolgellau. Set in a picturesque area, close to the coast and near to the Afon Mawddach River, for hundreds of years it was the only settlement with a bridge over the river. Nestled close to hills and conveniently close to the A496 and the A470, this could be a great place for a Welsh self-catering getaway.
About Llanelltyd for Cottage Holidays
The village is perhaps best known for the relics of Cymer Abbey which dates all the way back to 1198. This 12th century abbey used to draw villagers from far and wide to worship within its walls, being the centre of religion in this part of the country. The remains of Cymer Abbey are open to the public for most days of the year, making them a must-see if you happen to be visiting or taking a cottage break in Llanelltyd.
The village is quite small and there are no shops. There is a however, a lovely restaurant, with outdoor seating for those sunny days! There are also plenty of holiday cottages available to rent and there are plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants to be found in the neighbouring villages and towns including Dolgellau. Dolgellau is also worth a visit for its Tourist Information Centre which offers free leaflets along with help and advice on local attractions.
The beautiful countryside around Llanelltyd and the Mawddach Estuary is perfect for going on relaxing strolls or challenging hikes. There are walks that can be taken called the Precipice Walk and The Panorama Walk which are classic walks in the area, dating back to Victorian times. These routes take in the spectacular scenery around Dolgellau, Barmouth and Llanelltyd and are the best way to see some of these wonderful backdrops. The Mawddach Way is another walk which is quite challenging, and uses existing walkways around the beautiful hills which will take you through forestry and open fields.
Cycling is another popular activity in Llanelltyd, and there are many lovely routes that can be taken through quiet country lanes and around mountains. The heart of Snowdonia National Park is very close by and is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Wales, and should definitely be explored, by bike, car or foot, when on a cottage holiday in this serene and stunning part of Wales.
