If you've never seen pargetted houses or flint cottages, visit East Anglia which also has a plethora of historic period self-catering houses. There are exceptionally well-preserved medieval villages to explore, fine churches and stately homes open to the public throughout Suffolk.

There are a number of small villages in the west country that have a high number of thatched cottages that always create a picture postcard perfect scene. Cadgwith in Cornwall is one such village. The views of a collection of pretty thatched cottages, with gardens overspilling with flowers on entering the village, make every effort to get there rewarding. Cornwall cottage holidays are among the best for scenic locations and good views.

East Anglia, the Cotswolds and West Country are firm favourites for cottage holidays

If you adore peace and seclusion then do consider a cottage holiday in the more remote parts of Scotland and Ireland. You could stay in a country cottage complete with wood or turf fire, surrounded by glorious countryside and open sky.
