About Self-Catering Holidays in Leek

The market town of Leek in Staffordshire is sometimes referred to as The Gateway to the Peak District, being at the foot of the Peak District National Park. As well as venturing out into the countryside, holidaymakers taking a self-catering break in Leek enjoy all the amenities and attractions that this town has to offer.

Shopping is a real pleasure here, especially for those wanting to browse for antiques or for local delicacies in the many independent food shops. It’s also a true market town. Wednesday is the day for the outdoor market and also an indoor market, which is also open on Fridays and Saturdays in the Victorian Butter Market. In addition, an outdoor Saturday market sells antiques and collectibles and a fine food market occurs every third Saturday in the Market Place. Stock up on some good quality fare for your cottage holiday when staying here and enjoy the benefit of shopping locally.

If you like chugging along on a steam train, the Churnet Valley Railway is a popular heritage railway. Passengers travel through gorgeous countryside, often referred to as ‘Little Switzerland’. Families can also get involved in the special events that the railway organises.

Lovers of horticulture will appreciate Biddulph Grange Garden, owned by the National Trust and will want to visit whilst taking a cottage holiday. Entrance is of course free to National Trust members. This restored Victorian garden has unusual features and themes, which include a Scottish glen, Egyptian court, a glen in the Himalayas and a Chinese temple. Other highlights include the rhododendron collection, the Dahlia Walk and the Geological Gallery.

If you aren’t a member of the National Trust, you can get a joint ticket for this attraction along with access to Little Moreton Hall, a Tudor timber framed manor house with unusual features. In fact, today’s architects scratch their heads as to how the house was built in the first place, given its lack of foundations. A guided tour will answer some questions as well as provide an insight into life in the 17th century. Explore the knot garden and find out what vegetables and herbs the Tudors grew and how they used them in their meals and for medicine. You can also sample the produce in the tea room.

Any local resident will advise you to spend time at Rudyard Lake, an artificial lake in the hilly setting of the Staffordshire Moorlands. It’s popular for water sports, fishing and walking.

Staying in Leek means it’s very easy to travel to Alton Towers theme park. A day out amongst some of the most thrilling rides in the land is a great contrast and it keeps the kids entertained.
