About Self-Catering Holidays in Allihies
Allihies has a rich history of copper mining which occurred in the town for an incredible 3,500 years from the Bronze Age, and can be seen in the engine house on the mountain by the settlement, installed in 1862. When the mine closed due to a large drop in prices of copper in the 1870s, a lot of the miners immigrated to the USA, particularly to Butte, Montana. Today, this engine house has been conserved by the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland due to its historical and cultural significance.
Discover the Allihies Copper Mine Museum on a cottage holiday. This is a popular attraction in the village which is interesting, educational and fun.
