There is also an abandoned mine called Glengowla Mine just outside of Oughterard which has not been used since 1865 and makes for a wonderful and eerie day out. The mine is known for its extremely rare, but beautiful, quartz and fluorite crystals and is unique in that it is the only show mine in Ireland.
