South Woodham Ferrers is a well-designed residential new town surrounded by countryside on most sides and the river Crouch to the south. It has a surprising number of attractions for anyone wishing to stay and explore mid Essex.

There is a good leisure centre with a swimming pool and various sports facilities. During school holidays, numerous courses are run for children. Holidaymakers can also book one hour or three hour sessions; it would keep the children entertained. There is lots to do for children in the town; a soft play centre for very young children, Marsh Farm, which is an open farm and playground for kids, Tropical Wings Zoo that enables children to meet certain animals, a skate park, football field and play parks galore.
The RHS Gardens at Hyde Hall, a five-minute drive away are not only beautiful to look at but also run a programme of inexpensive arts and crafts activities for young children during school holidays, in addition to the usual treasure hunts. A family day out fishing can be arranged at fishing lakes on the outskirts of South Woodham or at Hanningfield Reservoir, a fifteen-minute drive away.
Essex beaches are within reach; Southend-on-Sea is just over half-an-hour’s drive, Clacton is about an hour away. South Woodham can be a really good place to holiday, especially if you enjoy plenty of activity and have a car. There is a rail service to London which makes days out in the city a strong possibility.
