Cambridge’s Historical Appeal

An exciting city to visit and stay in, Cambridge with its large student population just buzzes with life. Meander around the city and soak in the atmosphere with magnificent historic buildings to admire.  Cambridge University has a number of fascinating museums to visit including the Fitzwilliam museum, a Polar Museum, a Museum of Zoology, a Museum of Classical Archaeology, a Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Sedgwick museum of earth sciences.   The University also has a Botanical garden.

Aside from the University’s museum and botanic garden, as a university city, there is a full programme of entertainment in Cambridge.  You can see theatre shows at the Arts Theatre and music concerts and comedy shows at the Corn Exchange.  There are also a number of festivals in Cambridge throughout the year including the Cambridge Folk Festival and the Science festival.  Some of these festivals are run by the university.

Cambridge is also a great place to shop with a good selection of shops including High Street chains, independent shops and bookshops.

Although a city, you will find plenty of green spaces and parks in Cambridge.  This is all part of what makes Cambridge such an appealing place to visit.

Because parking in the city centre can be difficult to find, Cambridge operates a Park and Ride service from selected points just outside the city.

A very nice treat in Cambridge is to visit one of the several patisseries to indulge in their exquisite cakes and pastries. Cambridge is an affluent area and there are a number of very good restaurants including some Michelin starred establishments, as well as welcoming pubs, cafes and more budget eateries.

 

 

Leisurely Pursuits in Cambridge

A walk by the River Camb can be leisurely and fascinating. See people punting on the river, chatting on the riverbank and in pubs overlooking the water. Whilst in Cambridge do remember to watch out for the cyclists. Many university students use cycles to get around and you will see many bike stores throughout the city.  Also on account of there being no cycle paths you may at times end up sharing a pavement with a cyclist.

One fairly romantic but rather expensive thing to do is to sail on the river in a punt, accompanied by families of graceful swans and greedy ducks noisily waiting to share your picnic lunch.  You might spot Cambridge's own 'Bridge of Sighs', modelled on the Venetian version.
