The Holiday Home: About The Manor House
6 Bedroom, Sleeps 12 Manor House near Ashbourne and Uttoxeter
This holiday home that sleeps 12 is a bit of a treasure. It is situated on the outskirts of the village of Marston Montgomery, under seven miles distant from Alton Towers. It is the kind of holiday home that is wonderful for a couple of families sharing, their children able to have day trips to the theme park, play in the extensive gardens of the house and indeed in the rambling house itself. What super games of ‘hide and seek’ could take place here. This large manor house is Grade II listed and despite the numerous period features such as wooden panelling on walls, exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces, the accommodation is comfortable and attractive but not ‘posh’. Ideal for extended families, there are six bedrooms and enough public areas for a group to have plenty of personal private space.
A large sweeping driveway leads up to the property and offers plenty of parking spaces. There are lawned gardens with shrubberies to the front and back where garden tables and chairs stand. It is always good to have somewhere to dine or relax outdoors when we have a good British summer.
This lovely manor house is a spacious rambling property. Cooking in the attractive kitchen is on a big range cooker with oven. There is also a handy microwave and an American style fridge freezer. The all essential dishwasher is included as is a washing machine and tumble dryer. This is a holiday home where you can keep up with the day to day washing for your family should you wish to.
The kitchen and dining room are one large open room that has rustic beams on the ceiling, a wood burner and a stack of logs in the fireplace. It is a most welcoming room that is kept cosy by the underfloor heating and the log burner. After dinner, enjoy playing board games or chatting around the dining table.
A television stands in the beamed sitting room, or some of your group may prefer to relax in the second sitting room which features heavy panelling and an ancient wooden fireplace. The house benefits from Broadband Internet, so listen to music or WhatsApp friends and tell them about this charming self-catering holiday home near Alton Towers. There is much to admire in this house, especially the craftsmanship of yesteryear.
A wet room, near the front door offers ground floor cloakroom facilities. The bedroom on this floor is suitable for wheelchair users and together with the ground floor wet room is an asset if you have anyone in your group who has mobility impairment.
The remaining five bedrooms are on the upper floors, four on the 1st floor and one of the 2nd floor. These include a super-king size bedroom, a family room with a double bed and a trundle bed and two more double bedrooms. The family bathroom features a traditional panelled roll-top bath and a separate shower cubicle plus the usual washbasin and W.C. Each of the bedrooms is carpeted and tastefully furnished. Browse through the photographs to examine the décor in each. Note the window seat fitted in the bay window recess and the swing suspended from the beams. This house will delight more and more as you explore it.
The cutest and most romantic bedroom is under the eaves on the top floor. The walls and ceilings are of a pale coloured panelled wood and supports stand at angles at the foot of the bed. A little agility is needed to make the most of this bedroom so send any young coupes up there – they will love it. There is also an additional low bed.
Marston Montgomery is a small village and although it has a local pub, which could be useful, the nearby town of Rocester offers a bit more in the way of shops and facilities. That has an Indian restaurant and a fish and chip shop for non-cooking days. No one wants to cook a big meal after spending the entire day out at Alton Towers or sightseeing. The wonderful Peak District is a short drive north and would be super for bicycle rides on the traffic-free bike trails or for visiting tourist attractions and caves.
