The village of Welford-in-Avon lies 4 miles to the south west of Stratford upon Avon, the home of all things Shakespeare. It is a pretty village with numerous thatched cottages and half-timbered period houses that give it much character. A focal point is the red, white and blue maypole on the village green, used in traditional English May day celebrations. It is the tallest maypole in England at 20 metres. There is also a general store, excellent butchers, garage, three public houses and a golf course (10 min walk). The cultural centre of Stratford-upon-Avon which is just a short drive away has a fine range of restaurants, shops, leisure facilities and is the home of the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company.
