Charming Towns and Villages in Bedfordshire
Bedfordshire is known for its countryside and country life, but is also home to a number of picturesque towns and villages to visit on a cottage break. The county town of Bedford too with its riverside setting has a certain appeal in places also.
• Some of Bedfordshire’s prettiest towns and villages include Ampthill, Pavenham and Woburn.
• Ampthill, has to be one of the most picturesque market towns in Bedfordshire. The town is very charming with a number of impressive Georgian buildings, listed buildings and antique shops. The town itself dates back to the 1200s. On the outskirts of Ampthill, there is Katherine's Cross, which was erected in memory of Katherine of Aragon (one of Henry the VIII's wives) who lived in Ampthill for a year. Not far from charming Ampthill there are the ruins of Houghton House which can be visited too.
• Pavenham, is a small village with plenty of historic charm. Pretty thatched cottages are a feature of this idyllic spot.
• Although small, the historic town of Woburn is perfectly formed and home to a pub, a number of good cafes, gift shops and antique shops. Nearby, is Woburn abbey and gardens which can be visited (charges apply). The countryside surrounding Woburn is particularly beautiful. It's no wonder that the decision was made long ago to build the Woburn estate in this picturesque spot.
