Top Towns to Visit in Buckinghamshire

Particularly noteworthy places to visit on a self catering break in Buckinghamshire include:

Old Amersham

Old Amersham is situated at the bottom of a hill, nestled in the Chiltern countryside and is quite separate from the newer part of the town, Amersham which is situated on the hill.  Old Amersham is both picturesque and old worldy.  It centres on a very wide high street (from the days of coaching inns where Old Amersham would have been one of the first stop off points for journeys from London on to Birmingham) and also has an ancient Market Hall which is still used for occasional markets today.  It is a very desirable area and the high street itself is lined with designer shops, craft shops, restaurants and old coaching inns which have now been transformed in to modern pubs or hotels but sympathetically, retaining original features.  The pavements are mostly cobbled and Old Amersham has quite a village feel to it.

Amersham Museum is located in an original Tudor Hall house along the High Street.  Walking tours around the Old Town are offered from the museum on Sundays for a small fee.  Amersham itself has good links with London and is the last stop on the Metropolitan underground line.  Old Amersham is around 20 minutes walk from the underground station or a short car drive away and feels a million miles away from London.  Old Amersham is surrounded by beautiful Chiltern Hills, adding to the appeal of this special place.

Buckingham & the surrounding area

Stowe gardens near BuckinghamBuckingham is a small market town in Buckinghamshire.  There are a number of old buildings in Buckingham, perhaps the most noteworthy being Buckingham’s Old Gaol which is now a museum, but was originally a prison.  It is interesting not only due to its history but also by virtue of the outward appearance.  The Old Gaol is somewhat castle like – quite unusual for a jail.  The Old Gaol was built in around 1748.
