Hathersage is one of the top places to stay in the Peak District

With fine stone-buildings and an attractive setting on the banks of the River Derwent within the Peak District National Park, Hathersage is understandably one of the top places to visit in the Peak District. This large village benefits from a relatively central location within the National Park, close to the Hope Valley and only around 10 miles from Sheffield. The scenic countryside in Derwent Valley and Hope Valley draws people in and the area in particularly attracts keen walkers and climbers for self-catering breaks.

Those with a love of history will want to visit the historical buildings in the village whilst on a cottage holiday here. The village church, which dates back to the late 1300s and early 1400s, is of interest to those fascinated by the historic background of the folk hero, Robin Hood. One of his robber gang, namely Little John, is said to be buried in the churchyard! Readers of the Bronte sisters also have a connection to explore. Charlotte stayed at the vicarage in 1845 when visiting a friend and wrote part of Jane Eyre whilst there. It’s interesting to see actual local landmarks that the novelist used for fictional locations in the story. These include the real location behind Thornfield Hall, which most experts agree was based on North Lees Hall on the edge of the village.

However, Hathersage is more than scenery and literary heroes. Many families enjoy a day at the open-air swimming pool. You can buy family tickets when you visit this heated pool and there is a covered veranda at one side. Local residents are proud of their facility, which has served the community since 1936. Some ‘night swim’ sessions also run. In addition to swimming, you can kick a ball around or have a picnic on the adjacent playing field or play in the hard play area. A café (which is open all through the year) serves hot and cold food and drinks. With excellent facilities such as these, Hathersage is an obvious choice for a family cottage break.

Being so near to Sheffield, it’s not surprising to find a connection with the cutlery industry. Just outside the village, visitors can see cutlery being made (on weekdays) and a fine collection in a building that has won architectural awards. Why not visit when taking a cottage holiday in Hathersage? Built for the celebrated designer, David Mellor, the Round Building, as it is known, was constructed on the site of a gasworks. The David Mellor Cutlery Factory contains a Design Museum, where examples of his designs, including handmade silver, can be seen. Families can enjoy a day out at the site, which also provides a café. You can also browse for gifts at the Country Shop. As well as David Mellor designed cutlery, the shop stocks handmade pottery and other craft items and local produce.
