Uplowman is a peaceful rural hamlet in Devon, nestled in trees and surrounded by fields and pastures, with an ideal setting for a rural retreat break. The village takes its name from the nearby river Lowman that sources in Exmoor and ends south of Tiverton. The village is ideally situated for exploring Exmoor National Park which is only around 12 miles away and for discovering mid Devon as well as the north Devon and Somerset coast on a cottage holiday.
About Uplowman for Cottage Holidays
The village supports its own school and has a church that was built around 1500, the benefactor being none other than Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond, mother to Henry VII and paternal grandmother of King Henry VIII. Another famous lady with links to Uplowman was Joyce Wethered. She was the last family member to inhabit Knighthayes Court, a nearby gothic Victorian Manor, built by Tiverton lace industrialists the Heathcoat-Amory family, and now run by the National Trust. Joyce Wethered, who became a world championship golfer and a noted gardener, was the wife of Sir John Heathcoat-Amory. The house and its magnificent gardens are open most weeks of the year and are a recommended place to visit.
The area within a comfortable drive of Uplowman offers diverse attractions and sights. Pubs, restaurants, hills, moorland, beaches, country houses and gardens and children’s parks are all waiting to be discovered on a self-catering break. And with the M5 so close you have easy access to other parts of Devon and Somerset.
