Everywhere you go in Christchurch you are reminded that this is an ancient town with roots going back to the Iron Age. There is a Norman castle, a priory church dating from 1094 and a replica ducking stool. The town was strongly fortified in the Second World War and an existing commercial airfield was taken over by warplanes. It was at the Engineering Experimental Establishment in Christchurch that Donald Bailey developed the Bailey Bridge in the early 1940s. Today Christchurch is a thriving town with lots of speciality shops, a Monday street market and fine restaurants. It positively blooms in the spring and summer and has won awards for its floral displays. Young kids will love Serendipity Sam’s indoor play centre or water adventures at Slash Park and all ages will have a great time visiting the quay whilst on a cottage break.
Steamer Point Beach is a sand and shingle beach that is designated for water sports and the UK’s annual windsurfing championships are held here. Close by is Friars Cliff Beach with some amazing views of the Isle of Wight. Highcliffe Beach is designated especially safe for your children and while you’re there you can take refreshments at the magnificent 19th century Highcliffe Castle. There is an isolated beach at Muddeford reached by foot or by land train. There is also a quay at Muddeford from where fishing and pleasure boat trips operate. Further along the coast are the resorts of Boscombe, Bournemouth and Poole Harbour which you may wish to visit whilst on a cottage holiday.
Just north of Christchurch at Bournemouth Airport in Hurn you’ll have fun packed experiences that could last days. An aviation museum has a wonderful collection of planes. Here you’ll also find Adventure Wonderland. Whatever the weather the kids will have the times of their lives with scores of fun rides and action play. You won’t be left out either. Try your hand at skiing or snowboarding at the Snowtrax Centre. And if it all gets a little too much you’re very well located in Christchurch to take some leisurely time out in the peace and quiet of The New Forest National Park, just a short drive away where you can enjoy woodland walks and marvel at the wild ponies.
Christchurch has plenty to offer for a special holiday in the West Country and whether you plan to book a cottage by the coast or inland, you can be assured of plenty to see and do in the local area on your break away.
