Less than a mile away from Duntish, in nearby Buckland Newton is a local pub ‘The Gaggle of Geese’ which you can visit for a tipple with the friendly locals whilst on your cottage holiday. A controversial attraction close to Duntish is the famous Cerne Giant. The 180’ high naked, club carrying figure, carved into chalk on a hillside, is the largest of its kind and has been the subject of much speculation. As there were no mentions of the giant prior to the 17th century it is thought to have been created then as political satire. However it is widely considered to be much older and folklore has it associated with fertility.

The amazing gardens of Miterne House are just a short drive from Duntish and recommended for a visit. Over 1.5 miles of pathways open up a glorious array of varieties and colours of flowers, trees and plants, with small lakes and streams, for you to enjoy during a leisurely stroll. The gardens are open between March and October, but the house, once in the Churchill family, is reserved for private functions.

Sherborne is the nearest town to Duntish and is well worth on a visit when on a cottage holiday in this part of the West Country. This historic town boasts two castles, a magnificent abbey together with many medieval buildings. The latest of its castles was built by Sir Walter Raleigh and with its gardens is open to the public. The ‘old’ castle is in ruins but is no less romantic for visitors. The town thrives as a busy shopping centre with a large variety of stores, specialist shops and antiques outlets.

The county town of Dorchester is less than 10 miles south of Duntish and beyond, the seaside resort of Weymouth is only a few miles further. As well as its sandy beach with traditional holiday amusements, such as Punch and Judy and donkey rides, Weymouth also has an attractive, historic harbour and a terminal for ferries to the Channel Islands and France. A boat trip can be the best way to appreciate the Jurassic Heritage coast. The seafront at Weymouth also has some delightful, relaxing gardens which are well worth a visit.
