The rural village of Hazelbury Bryan in north Dorset’s Hardy Country is ideal for a peaceful country cottage holiday. With a tranquil atmosphere and numerous pretty thatched cottages, it is the perfect, quiet getaway, yet lies within 30 miles of some of Dorset’s top attractions, coast and historical towns.

About Self-Catering Holidays in Hazelbury Bryan

A settlement from before the 13th century, the village is today a mix of thatched cottages, a 15th century church and modern build houses. The village has its own pub, ‘The Antelope Inn’ along with a small shop for your everyday essentials whilst on your cottage holiday. Nestling safely in the Blackmore Vale, Hazelbury Bryan is in a triangle formed by the towns of Sherborne, Blanford Forum and Dorchester.

11 miles to the west of the village is Sherborne, a historic market town with some interesting attractions worth seeing on a self-catering break. Sherborne with its fine historical buildings is a charming place to while away the time, taking it easy in one of the cafes or browsing in one of the shops. Sherborne boasts two castles, one in ruins, the other, more a large country house, very much intact and, with its 42 acres of grounds, open to the public. Sir Walter Raleigh built and lived at the latter until he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1617. The parish church of Sherborne had been a Saxon Cathedral and a Benedictine Abbey before in 1539 becoming an abbey church. It towers over the town’s narrow streets and is considered to be the one of most beautiful churches in the country.

Whilst in Sherborne why not visit the Tourist Information Centre on Digby Road? There you can pick up free leaflets along with resources and information on things to see and do in this part of the West Country.

The county town of Dorchester is 16 miles south from Hazelbury Bryan. It is another town full of history and plenty of interesting architecture to recommend it. There is a grade II listed keep that is now a military museum, a Roman town house excavated in the 1930s and Maiden castle, the largest hill fort in England dating back to 3000BC. Dorchester is also the gateway to the south coast.

Just 23 miles from your cottage base is the thriving seaside town of Weymouth. Well worth a visit whilst on a cottage break in Hazelbury Bryan, Weymouth has all the traditional attractions of a seaside resort together with a quaint harbour and a ferry terminal. To the east of Weymouth the ever popular seaside resort of Bournemouth with its long stretch of golden sandy beach is like a magnet for sun worshipers in summer time. Bournemouth has much more to offer than just sun and sea though, the town is rich in culture and has a vibrant entertainment programme. Other coastal towns worth a visit include Swanage, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
