About Sowerby for Cottage Holidays

Sowerby is sometimes seen as being a suburb of Thirsk, but it is really its own village. Its most famous association is with the vet and best-selling author, the late James Herriot (real name – Alf Wight), who lived in the village. His life and career is celebrated at the World of James Herriot, a museum housed in his former home and surgery.

Sowerby has the attributes of a charming village, with a beck and a packhorse bridge, an old timbered house, and a church going back to Norman times. St. Oswald's Church hosts classical music concerts every month. Of course, the pub is an important part of the community also, and this village pub is known for its good food and beer. You can sit in the beer garden on a warm day or enjoy one of the live music acts there.
