Hints and Tips on Cottage Holidays in Amotherby

Holiday cottages to rent in Amotherby, North Yorkshire

Amotherby is a small village situated in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. Its houses are mainly built from local stone. Anyone staying here is close to a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are opportunities to see lots of wildlife. The village contains the church of St. Helens and there is one pub. A tennis court can be found close to the Village Hall.

A cottage holiday in Amotherby may appeal to those with a love of history as the village benefits from a number of historical buildings.  St. Helens dates from Norman times and has a 15th century tower, but most of the building was rebuilt in 1871. Interesting features include Anglo-Viking crosses and covers for tombs and a beautifully carved, 14th century effigy of a knight called Sir John de Bordesden. The conservation churchyard is considered very attractive.

Amotherby is fortunately positioned, having a number of larger market towns in the vicinity, including Malton.  Malton is an attractive town with plenty of shops, cafes and pubs and it’s known locally for its annual Malton Food Lovers Festival. It is always useful for people on self-catering breaks to be able to access shops for those essential treats that make a holiday enjoyable.

There are a number of family attractions in Ryedale too to discover on a self-catering break. Eden Camp, on the edge of Malton, is a museum dedicated to World War II and its impact on Britain. Located in what was an actual prisoner of war camp, it is very popular with school groups and families and represents a valuable historical educational resource for children. Flamingo Land, also near Malton, is part theme park, part zoo and has extreme rides and family rides and a collection of mammals, birds, farm animals and reptiles.

For another terrific and educational day out on your cottage holiday, it’s a short ride to Hutton-le-Hole to see the Ryedale Folk Museum. It’s an open-air museum, which has won an award as Museum of the Year. Five acres trace the history of primitive humans through to the 1950s and North Yorkshire life is documented with replica houses, shops, vehicles, domestic artefacts and memorabilia. The museum hosts regular events including craft displays and rare farm animals.

Helmsley is a great place to discover on a cottage break.  This market town is located near to Amotherby and is of historic and architectural interest and hikers know it as the beginning of the Cleveland Way Trail. Helmsley Castle’s history can be traced from its construction around 1200 through many changes until Victorian times. Nearby, Helmsley Walled Garden covers five acres and is a kitchen garden, dating back to 1756. It’s not all history in the town, though, and the kids will love a dip in Helmsley Pool. This open-air, heated pool (only open in summer) is one of the few left of its kind in the UK. Residents here are also proud of Helmsley Arts Centre, a venue for showing films, concerts, stage productions and workshops.

Pickering is another market town, convenient for families staying in Amotherby. Attractions here include the 13th century Pickering Castle. Beck Isle Museum is a treasure trove of Ryedale history, going back 200 years. Visitors can step into a Victorian pub, a chemist’s shop and a blacksmith’s shop and see agricultural equipment and displays on the theme of railways and mining.
