Amotherby is a small village situated in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. Its houses are mainly built from local stone. The village contains the church of St. Helens and there is one pub. A tennis court can be found close to the Village Hall.

St. Helens dates from Norman times and has a 15th century tower, but most of the building was rebuilt in 1871. It’s an open-air museum, which has won an award as Museum of the Year. Five acres trace the history of primitive humans through to the 1950s and North Yorkshire life is documented with replica houses, shops, vehicles, domestic artefacts and memorabilia. The museum hosts regular events including craft displays and rare farm animals.
Helmsley is a great place to discover on a cottage break. This market town is located near to Amotherby and is of historic and architectural interest and hikers know it as the beginning of the Cleveland Way Trail. Helmsley Castle’s history can be traced from its construction around 1200 through many changes until Victorian times. Nearby, Helmsley Walled Garden covers five acres and is a kitchen garden, dating back to 1756. It’s not all history in the town, though, and the kids will love a dip in Helmsley Pool. This open-air, heated pool (only open in summer) is one of the few left of its kind in the UK. Residents here are also proud of Helmsley Arts Centre, a venue for showing films, concerts, stage productions and workshops.
Pickering is another market town, convenient for families staying in Amotherby. Attractions here include the 13th century Pickering Castle. Beck Isle Museum is a treasure trove of Ryedale history, going back 200 years. Visitors can step into a Victorian pub, a chemist’s shop and a blacksmith’s shop and see agricultural equipment and displays on the theme of railways and mining.
