Located around 15 miles from Exmoor National Park and conveniently located with good access from the M5, is the village of Cossington in Somerset.  With the Polden Hills as its backdrop, Cossington lies between Bridgewater and Glastonbury and is thought to have originally been part of the Glastonbury Abbey estate.   Picturesque and nestled in greenery, Cossington could be a great choice for a country cottage holiday.

What Cossington offers for Cottage Breaks

Cossington is well situated for those visiting Somerset and the attractions it offers. It is but a short journey from Glastonbury with its spectacular historic abbey; the legendary burial place of King Arthur and its equally legendary music festival and other musical events. Music features prominently in Cossington’s calendar too. Each year the village plays host to national and international musicians during its Cossington Concert series, now in its 11th season. Appearing in local venues such as the Cossington Manor gardens, local churches and the new village hall in Cossington all of the concerts attract full houses and are sometimes linked to superior dining events.   Depending on the time of year that you visit, you may be lucky enough to attend one of these events whilst on a cottage holiday.

There’s some great dining to be had too at the Red Tile pub in Cossington. Originally known as The Cossington Inn, the then thatched roof building dates back to the early 18th century. With a boom in the Bridgewater tile industry, the inn’s roof was clad in tiles and supposedly named ‘Red Tile’ by US airmen, using it as a landmark on their return to base in World War II.  Long before then the Romans occupied the area and built a road along the ridge of the Polden Hills. A great find, the Polden Hill hoard of Roman artefacts is housed in the British Museum.  Once the habitat for bears and wolves, the 10-mile stretch of undulating countryside is now home to deer and other wildlife including rare butterflies.   Orchids grow in woodlands on the slopes, but are not available for picking.

The location of Cossington, close to the M5 and with easy access to the towns of Street, Glastonbury, Bridgewater, and the coast at Burnham, makes it an ideal base from which to discover some of the best of Somerset on a self-catering holiday. Whether you need to find a pet-friendly cottage, a romantic love nest or a large country house, we trust that you’ll enjoy browsing through our collection of cottages.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Cossington, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Somerset.
