Dumfries and Galloway takes in most of the Galloway Forest Park and also the craggy coastline from Cairnryan and Loch Ryan, sweeping south east to the Solway Coast. This mainly rural area a host of outdoor sports in Galloway Forest, hundreds of miles of coastal walks where you can be alone with your dogs, sea views and the sound of gulls. There are various small beaches where dogs are allowed to run free. You may wish to stop and pay a visit to Logan Botanic Gardens during your holiday in southwest Scotland, although sadly pets are not permitted in the gardens.
Newton Stewart is one of the bigger towns – a popular place to stay for a self-catering holiday because of shops, pubs, fish and chips and other facilities that holidaymakers like to have nearby. It is also just a short drive from the Kirroughtree Forest which has trails for mountain bikers and walkers, a decent café, an adventure playground for children, a bicycle hire shop and is a superb place to take a picnic and enjoy a summer’s day. Red squirrels and chaffinches abound.
Do browse through or wooden holiday lodges that allow guests to bring their dog with them. You will find that each is nicely furnished and ready to welcome holidaymakers and their pets. Beds are made up and ready for two footed guests, four footed guests need to bring their own. Remember a few toys to make your pet feel at home, their usual dog bowls and leads. Pine lodges tend to have a natural wood floor where you will be able to create a pet corner although your dogs are likely to seek out the cosiest spots which may be directly in front of a wood burner of radiator.
