What Burton-in-Kendal offers for Cottage Breaks

Burton-in-Kendal itself is a thriving village which is located in the part of Cumbria that was historically, Westmorland. There is a thriving community in the village and a pub which used to be a coaching inn for stagecoaches that dates back to as early as 1763. The village market cross, built in the 1700s was used for criminals who were chained to it in leg irons. As you stroll up the main street, you’ll observe several Georgian houses. Also, visit the Church of St. James, which goes back to Norman times but went through a few restoration projects and incorporates different architectural styles. If you want horse riding, angling or a golf course, you will find good locations for these.

The market towns of Kirkby Lonsdale and Kendal are a short drive away, both offering shopping opportunities and eating-places. Whilst enjoying a cottage holiday why not visit the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal?  There you can see a film or stage production or relax in the bar and restaurant.

You can also see historic houses in sumptuous grounds close to Burton-in-Kendal. Levens Hall is a fine stately home with paintings, furniture and leather wall coverings that are pleasing to the eye. A Grade I listed garden contains a famous topiary, a bowling green and a rose garden. Also on show in the grounds are a herd of deer and rare breed goats. Families also enjoy the picnic and play areas and the collection of traction engines.

Another place worth a visit on a self-catering break is Sizergh Castle, an attractive medieval house in which a family still lives, with acres of lovely grounds. The gardens contain a rock garden, pond and lake and the estate has woodland and orchards and plenty of different walking routes to follow. Children are entertained with a quiz and information sheets. It’s also a good place for wildlife and you may be lucky in spotting red deer or great crested newts in the rock garden. Sizergh is also known for its hawfinches, which are normally difficult to come across.

Leighton Moss RSPB Wildfowl Reserve offers another chance to see interesting bird life. This large reedbed supports marsh harriers and bitterns amongst other species and deer are seen here too. Follow the nature trails and observe from the hides.

Visitors to Burton-in-Kendal have so much heritage, wildlife and opportunities for outdoor sports on their doorstep, not to mention the wonderful countryside, rightly celebrated throughout the UK.

The wild land of the region has long been celebrated by writers and painters and offers a wonderfully relaxing holiday destination with magnificent views in every direction. We hope you find the best country cottage in Burton-in-Kendal for you.
