Huntingford is an idyllic rural hamlet on the border of Dorset and Wiltshire, well off the beaten track where you will find a charming collection of country cottages and farm buildings. Nestled in greenery, yet not too far away from the A303 for exploring the West Country, this attractive rural location is an ideal place for a tranquil self-catering holiday or rural retreat break. There is lots of open countryside close by plus a number of attractions to discover only a few miles away and further afield.

Hints and Tips on Cottage Holidays in Huntingford

Just two miles from Huntingford is the Wiltshire town of Mere. Here you’ll find a selection of shops including food stores, butchers, bakers, a pharmacy and a choice of pubs and restaurants. So whether eating in or out you can stock up for your cottage holiday here. Also nearby is the town of Gillingham which is just 3 miles away.

A short distance from Mere at Stourton is the National Trust property Stourhead and its world famous gardens. Described as ‘a living work of art’ when it opened in the mid 1750s, the gardens have been an inspiration for generations of artists and photographers. The house is full of wonderful art treasures and Chippendale furniture. If you have youngsters in your party then a trip to Longleat must be on the cards whilst taking a cottage break in this part of the West Country. As well as the house and the wild animal safari, Longleat has expanded its activities to include themed adventure playgrounds which are just fantastic for children.

One attraction that hasn’t changed for centuries is Stonehenge. While staying at Huntingford be sure to take a trip to Salisbury Plain and have a close look at this special mystical place. The city of Salisbury is also recommended for a visit. The magnificent Gothic cathedral will take your breath away, especially if you climb up the 332 steps to the base of its 404ft spire. Mind you the view from there will take you breath away even more.

Back in Dorset the town of Shaftesbury should also be on your itinerary, a romantic, historic market town with wonderful architecture and interesting sites to recommend it. On Gold Hill, a steep, cobbled narrow street you can follow in the footsteps of the young lad pushing his bread bike to the top, in the famous Hovis TV commercial of 1973. If you fancy days out by the sea whilst on your self-catering break, the south coast is no more than an hour away from Huntingford. The popular resorts of Weymouth and Bournemouth offer traditional seaside fun or you may prefer the quieter resorts found along the Jurassic coast.  There is so much to see and do on offer in this part of the West Country making it an excellent place for a family or romantic getaway.
