Kirkbymoorside for a Cottage Holiday Near the North Yorkshire Moors: Kirkbymoorside is a small market town, situated in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire just outside of the North York Moors National Park.  A cottage holiday here could be an excellent choice for walkers, cyclists, climbers or caving enthusiasts.  The North York Moors National Park offers the opportunity to enjoy some or all of these activities whilst on a self-catering break.

Information on Cottage Holidays in Kirkbymoorside

Of note in Kirkbymoorside itself, is All Saints, the parish church here.  At one time the town did have the status of two castles and a few remains of one of them can be seen at the northern end of the town.  Kirkbymoorside has its fair share of pubs, shops and restaurants. This and the wonderful North Yorkshire scenery make a cottage holiday here very enjoyable. Walkers have their pick of beautiful places to go with both the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close by.

If golf is your hobby of choice, Kirkbymoorside Golf Club is a friendly club that welcomes visitors allowing you the opportunity to play whilst on holiday. To play on the manicured 18-hole course, it’s not necessary to have a handicap certificate. However, the play is described as ‘challenging’. The club is particularly proud of the view of the moors from the 13th tee, which is said to be very memorable.  Refreshments are available in the clubhouse.

For day trips out during a cottage stay, the nearby market town of Helmsley offers diverse attractions, such as Helmsley Castle, which dates from the 12th century. All Saints is the village church and is a splendid building, also originating in the 12th century. It’s noteworthy for its murals and stained glass windows and there is a letter on display, written by the explorer, David Livingston when he was in Africa. Helmsley Walled Garden is a fine example of a working kitchen garden.

If you are holidaying in the summer time and fancy a dip in the open air, a lot of restoration work has gone into getting Helmsley Pool up and running. This outside pool is kept at 28 degrees centigrade and is a pleasant addition on a hot day. Finally, Helmsley Arts Centre is a venue for live performances and events plus a weekly cinema.

History lovers may want to make the time on their self-catering break to see Rievaulx Abbey, remarkable for how much of it is still intact. As a very rich and successful monastery, it has a fascinating history and you can glean lots of useful information from a visit. Learn all about the day-to-day lives of the monks with an audio tour and enjoy the local produce in the café. The permanent exhibition, named The Work of God and Man, tells the story of how the abbey’s community supported themselves whilst pursuing a spiritual calling. Outside, the grounds include a sensory garden filled with the scent of various culinary herbs.

Another recommended outing is to the National Trust’s Nunnington Hall, a beautiful manor house with a walled garden and peacocks that like to strut around. As well as admiring the furnishings, it plays host to photography and art exhibitions.

Kirkbymoorside is a terrific base for a cottage holiday, especially for those who like outside activities. There is something to do in all seasons and the views are ample reward.  Whether you rent a romantic cottage or large family holiday home, we trust that you will enjoy browsing through the available options and enjoy exploring Kirkbymoorside and the North York Moors National Park.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Kirkbymoorside, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in North Yorkshire.
