Wrelton is a pretty little village with numerous quaint stone-built cottages located in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire.  Situated just outside of the splendour of the North Yorkshire Moors, this is excellent walking country and a great choice for an active self-catering break.

Advice on Cottage Holidays in Wrelton

About two miles from Wrelton, history lovers have a treat in store when staying in or visiting this village.  Earthworks from the Cawthorn Roman Camps indicate that an old Roman road must have been in the vicinity. Fortunately, the site is well preserved and archaeologists can see the remains of two forts. To see the site, visitors can follow the path along the Cawthorn Trail. It’s possible sometimes to join a guided tour. The route is an easygoing, one-mile loop, but it can get a bit windblown. Whatever the weather, the views of the moors are worth the trip. A trail guide is on sale from local shops and information centres.

Whilst enjoying a cottage holiday in this part of Yorkshire we also recommend that you visit the market town of Pickering which is just 2 miles away.  Pickering offers excellent amenities.  Also in Pickering is the award winning Beck Isle Museum which is staffed by expert volunteers. It presents a good day out and you can take a picnic along to eat by the river. No less than 27 themed rooms take you back in time. See the cobbler’s shop, the chemist’s shop and the gent’s tailors. There is also a display of clothes from previous centuries. Children have their own activity room, where they can use the dressing up box, toys and drawing materials and families can join the activity trails.

Pickering also has its own Tourist Information Centre so on arrival at this town we recommend that you pop in to the centre for free information, leaflets and more.

For a really special day out on your cottage break then why not take a ride on a steam train?  Pickering is the place to board one, on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. From Pickering, it’s an 18-mile route to Grosmont and sometimes the schedule extends to Whitby. Grosmont Station is in the style of the 1960s. Also on the line is Goathland Station, which has been used for TV’s Heartbeat and for the Harry Potter films. Many original features from the 1930s have been retained at Pickering Station.

The kids will also be very excited to visit the nearby Flamingo Land theme park. Teenage children will like the extreme rides, whilst the younger ones have their own age-appropriate rides. There is also a zoo here, so it’s like two outings in one.

So, Wrelton is a great place to stay, for thrills, Roman history, wide-open spaces and the romance of the steam locomotive.  Whether you need to find a romantic cottage for two or a large family cottage, we trust that you will enjoy browsing through the available options and hope you find a good quality cottage that exceeds your expectations.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Wrelton, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in North Yorkshire.
