Lowick is a small farming village in the north of Northumberland in England’s border country. This village is well situated for exploring a variety of Northumbria’s best attractions and could be a great choice for a country cottage holiday or a rural retreat getaway. The edge of the northern part of the Northumberland National Park is only around 5 miles away from Lowick and the coast is around 3 miles away so on a stay here you have the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds with both the coast and countryside easily accessible nearby. Some of Northumberland’s prettiest seaside villages and most impressive castles are within relatively easy reach of Lowick.
About Lowick for Cottage Holidays
Holy Island is a really special place and is just 9 miles from Lowick. Accessed via tidal causeway, check for safe crossing times and plan your outward and return journey with care. On arrival at Lindisfarne, enjoy walking by the sea and discovering the remains of Lindisfarne Priory. Lindisfarne Castle has an impressive presence, standing tall over the village. This castle was originally a garrison, then a holiday home and is now under the protection of the National Trust.
Further down the coast, another place to visit on a cottage holiday, around 13 miles from Lowick, is Bamburgh with its much photographed castle, gloriously located right by the beautiful sandy beach. A further 3 miles from here is the village of Seahouses. Many people head to Seahouses for the boat trips available here that take holidaymakers out to see seals or birds. Aside from this, there is little to recommend Seahouses itself as it is not a particularly picturesque place.
Craster on the other hand is a different matter. This picturesque little fishing village is located 24 miles from Lowick and is well worth a visit. If you wish you can visit the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle from here, via a coastal walk. This Castle is managed by English Heritage and accessed after a long walk. Please note that you need to be physically fit for this walk and those with mobility issues may prefer to admire the castle from a distance. Families with children should also note that there are no toilet facilities at Dunstanburgh Castle so again for the sake of convenience, the castle may be best viewed at a distance.
Boulmer another 2 miles along the coast, is a more popular choice for families to visit on a self-catering holiday. There is a long sandy beach at this pretty little village, a pub and public toilets. Another 4 miles from Boulmer is Alnmouth, which is worth visiting for its scenic qualities and sandy beach.
Of course if you want to discover the Northumberland countryside on a cottage holiday this area has plenty to offer. There are some excellent walks near Hadrian’s Wall. Pop in to your nearest tourist information office in Northumbria and pick up a free map for more guidance. Also practically on your doorstep are the Cheviot Hills, enjoy discovering this beautiful part of Northern England.
