About Cottage Breaks in Stoke St Gregory
The village takes its name from a derivation of the old English name for place, and the impressive parish church of St. Gregory, dating back to the 13th century. A grade I listed building, the church has been sympathetically nurtured over the centuries. It includes a set of 17th century stocks in its churchyard and it is an interesting place that you are free to visit on a cottage break.
The surrounding area and village itself is popular with walkers who can enjoy breathtaking scenery and wildlife watching from the footpaths that criss-cross the Somerset levels. The levels occupy an area between the Mendip and Quantock hills and are bisected by the Polden hills. History is long for this wetland that has no less than 32 sites of special interest.
Willow is commercially grown here and at Stoke St. Gregory you can get first hand knowledge of the process whilst on a self-catering break. The Willows and Wetlands Visitors Centre is operated by P.H.Coate and Son whose family have been specialists in producing willow products since 1819. Baskets, fencing, furniture, willow kits and tools are all made here and available for sale. The products are in great demand and some have been used in Hollywood films, Warhorse, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood to name but three.
Daily guided tours are hosted by the Coate family showing traditional and modern methods of production. There’s the opportunity for some tuition and also a tour of the withies where the willow is grown. It’s a fantastic day out to enjoy on a cottage break and the centre includes a coffee lounge.
