Stoke St. Gregory is a peaceful, rural village in the Somerset levels surrounded by fields and pastures. It is self contained with its own shop, two pubs, two churches, an active village hall, playing fields and recreation grounds. This village is a lovely place to stay for a country cottage holiday or rural retreat break where you can discover the nearby countryside or some of the best of the coasts of Somerset and Devon.  There is also excellent road access to many places of interest.

About Cottage Breaks in Stoke St Gregory

The village takes its name from a derivation of the old English name for place, and the impressive parish church of St. Gregory, dating back to the 13th century. A grade I listed building, the church has been sympathetically nurtured over the centuries. It includes a set of 17th century stocks in its churchyard and it is an interesting place that you are free to visit on a cottage break.

The surrounding area and village itself is popular with walkers who can enjoy breathtaking scenery and wildlife watching from the footpaths that criss-cross the Somerset levels. The levels occupy an area between the Mendip and Quantock hills and are bisected by the Polden hills.  History is long for this wetland that has no less than 32 sites of special interest.

Willow is commercially grown here and at Stoke St. Gregory you can get first hand knowledge of the process whilst on a self-catering break.  The Willows and Wetlands Visitors Centre is operated by P.H.Coate and Son whose family have been specialists in producing willow products since 1819. Baskets, fencing, furniture, willow kits and tools are all made here and available for sale. The products are in great demand and some have been used in Hollywood films, Warhorse, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood to name but three.

Daily guided tours are hosted by the Coate family showing traditional and modern methods of production. There’s the opportunity for some tuition and also a tour of the withies where the willow is grown. It’s a fantastic day out to enjoy on a cottage break and the centre includes a coffee lounge.

Whilst on a self-catering break in this part of the West Country, you can be assured that there are local pubs should you wish to have a sociable drink down the pub.  In the village centre you can enjoy the hospitality of two pubs/restaurants, the Rose and Crown and the Royal Oak. Surprisingly both are relatively modern and offer bright comfortable surroundings with a choice of good quality local ales and food. Both of the pubs warmly welcome families, holidaymakers and day trippers,

This is a naturally beautiful part of the West Country in a wonderful rural setting yet just 10 miles from Taunton and 12 miles from Bridgwater.  Burnham on Sea on the coast is accessible just 23 miles away and Exmoor National Park is less than 20 miles away.   This is an excellent area for a country cottage or rural retreat holiday.  Whether you need to find a good quality pet friendly cottage or a romantic retreat in the West Country you can be assured of plenty of choice with us.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Stoke St Gregory, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Somerset.
