Wellington is situated in the beautiful landscape of the Vale of Taunton Deane close to the Devon/Somerset border.  It is a small rural town that grew up with the wool and clothing industries. The river Tone and Blackdown hills border the town.  Located less than 10 miles from Exmoor National Park, Wellington could be a natural choice for a self-cottage break in the West Country.

Information on Cottage Holidays in Wellington

The town’s two main attractions to discover on a cottage holiday are the award-winning Wellington Park and Wellington Monument. The park was given to the town by major town employers, bankers and clothing manufacturers the Fox family in 1903 and has been updated and improved thanks to a lottery grant. It is a most attractive and peaceful area, connecting the town to the countryside. Events are held in the park during summer and besides human visitors it also attracts much wildlife and birdlife.

Dominating the skyline above Wellington is the Wellington Memorial. The monument was constructed in honour of Arthur Wellesley the first Duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo and went on to become Prime Minister. Perhaps his greatest claim to fame was having the wellington boot named after him.  The monument is built on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills and is 175 feet high. It can be seen from miles around and affords glorious views across the Vale of Taunton Deane to the Bristol Channel and Exmoor National Park.

Another interesting historical figure to learn about whilst on a self-catering break in Wellington is Sir John Popham. Sir John was Lord Chief Justice of England and presided over the trials of Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes. A monument to him is erected in the Grade 1 listed 15th century church, St. John the Baptist.  You can find out more interesting information and facts about the history of the town at Wellington Museum.

Wellington’s shopping facilities include supermarkets, high street brands and speciality shops. The town has an independent cinema that is fitted out in art décor style.

The town is ideally located for visiting many of Somerset’s finest attractions and for some of the top tourist attractions in north Devon. The north Somerset coast and Exmoor National Park are within easy reach. Being very close to M5 junction 26 also makes further journeys more accessible.  The coast is also relatively easily accessible at around 15 miles away.  Whether you opt for a cottage stay in Wellington itself or a country cottage or rural retreat stay nearby, we trust that you will have the best of times in Somerset.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Wellington, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Somerset.
