About Portmagee for Cottage Holidays
The lovely village of Portmagee means ‘ferry’ in the Irish language which is apt as it is a crossing point to Valentia Island on the Iveragh Peninsula. Located in the county of Kerry on the south western tip of Ireland, there is now a bridge which connects Portmagee to the island and it makes a great place in which to retreat for a cottage break by the sea, with a picturesque harbour and stunning views over the ocean and towards Valentia Island.
Whilst enjoying a cottage holiday in this area of Ireland you may want to visit Skellig Michael, a rocky island off the coast by Portmagee which is home to an incredible monastic settlement from the 6th century. Isolated around 9 miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, Skellig Michael has a rich history as it used to be the heart of for Irish Christian monks living a monastic life for an incredible 600 years. Interesting things to see on the island include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Gaelic monastery and because of its difficult accessibility, over the years it hasn’t been visited by too many tourists, meaning that the remnants of the monastery have been wonderfully preserved. The craggy cliff sides and little stone huts where the monks used to live make fascinating visits for anyone interested in Irish history and architecture. Boat trips are available from Portmagee harbour.
As well as visits to the incredible Skellig Michael, Valentia Island is very easy to access and is home to the sub-tropical gardens of Glanleam House, its own heritage centre and a pretty harbour with spectacular views. With a small population of less than one thousand people, you will feel a great sense of community with the people of Valentia Island, and it makes a wonderful place to visit if you want to try something a little different whilst on a cottage break in County Kerry.
Portmagee has lots of cottages perched by the sea with striking views and fresh sea air that will fill your lungs and your heart. With little pubs and cafes to settle into and numerous shops to purchase items and gifts that you will need while on a break here, it is the perfect place to kick back and relax on the Irish coastline.
