Information on Cottage Holidays in Waterville

The population of Waterville is only about five hundred but this just makes it all the more special, with friendly villagers willing to help you or give you a lovely chat, and no bustling crowds in sight, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing self-catering holiday.

Located on the Ring of Kerry, Waterville is popular with those who wish to experience some of the best scenery that Kerry has to offer and is often used as a relaxing spot to stop for trekking and to soak up the gorgeous shingle and sandy beach, the stunning lakes and the quaint village. There are lots of places in which to eat, from traditional Irish pubs to tasty seafood eateries with fish caught locally, and there are also charming little tea rooms to settle into. Hiring bicycles is easy as there is a centre in which to do so, and if you want to go canoeing on the lake, that can also be done here. Seeing the scenery via boat or cycle is a great way to lap up all that Waterville has to offer, or you can even hop on a horse and explore the backdrops on your cottage holiday this way.

Waterville is home to the annual Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival which takes place at the end of August and which you may be lucky enough to catch whilst holidaying in the village. It may seem strange to have a festival dedicated to the famous ‘tramp’ of silent films of the early 20th century in this small Irish village, but Charlie Chaplin in fact holidayed in Waterville for over ten years ever since 1959, as he simply fell in love with the village. The festival was first started in 2011 and hosts many exciting events and film screenings, from silent discos to the Tramps Ball, as well as screenings of all sorts of films. There is also a competition where filmmakers from all over the world can submit comedy short films to win awards during the ceremonies of the festival. Today, there is a statue of Chaplin in the centre of Waterville in his memory.

Charming and quaint, picturesque and cultural, Waterville is an excellent place for a self-catering break by the seaside in Ireland. Whether you are coming for the Film Festival or just to experience the beauty on offer here, it is a place where, like Chaplin, you will wish to return to, year after year.
