A walk to Leigh on Sea along the promenade and coast is rewarded by good fish restaurants, art galleries and an interesting clutch of old houses.
The shopping centre in Southend has all the major chains but if holidaymakers want more, Lakeside Shopping Centre is about an hour's drive along the A13.
