Self-catering Breaks in Ingleton for a Geological Playground

Ingleton is a real treasure in the Yorkshire Dales and ranks high amongst caving enthusiasts and hikers. Train lovers, too are blessed when they come into this area. It’s a location for outdoor activities and families who want to get away from it all.  Situated at the foot of Ingleborough, many walkers come here for access to this 2,373-foot hill. Along with Whernside and Penyghent, it forms The Three Peaks. Many people like to attempt one of these summits and all three is certainly a serious challenge.  Ingleton should be an excellent choice for a self-catering walking holiday in the Yorkshire Dales.

One of the most popular local walks is the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. Magnificent waterfalls and old oak woodland make this walk very special. It’s a good walk at a steady pace for reasonably fit families, at four and a half miles. Book a family sized country cottage in Ingleton to make sure that your holiday includes this particular walk.

About Self-Catering Holidays in Ingleton

Ingleton also has an interesting historical church to recommend it.  St. Mary’s is the pretty parish church for Ingleton and its features include a Norman font and a 15th century perpendicular tower.

From the exhilaration of having your head in the clouds to the thrill of exploring under the earth, cavers and potholers are often to be seen around Ingleton. That doesn’t mean ordinary families can’t get a taste of this underworld whilst on a cottage holiday. Show caves have well-established paths and sufficient lighting for anyone to feel safe, especially as a guide will always lead the way. Ingleborough Cave is a prime example, as is White Scar Cave, which is the longest show cave in Britain and celebrated for its waterfalls and plentiful stalactites.

One of the most famous of Yorkshire’s natural features is Gaping Gill. A geological wonder, it is a 322-foot pothole on the southern slopes of Ingleborough and it attracts cavers and cave divers from miles around.

Ingleton is fortunate in having the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line at its doorstep. You can get to Ribblehead Station with a 10-minute drive.  Seeing the scenery by train on your cottage break is tremendous fun and the kids will love it, especially if you choose to travel by steam train. The full route is 72 miles, but you can ride it in sections to suit your timetable. Quaint stations, pretty villages and the rolling Dales glide by the windows. Passengers are plunged into darkness in the long tunnel at Blea Moor and they marvel at the engineering achievement of the Ribblehead Viaduct with its 24 elegant arches.

On a blazing hot day, there is nothing to beat a refreshing swim in the outdoors. Not many open-air pools still exist in Britain, so Ingleton’s heated pool is doubly appreciated. Located by the riverside, it is well maintained. It’s only open during the summer season.

If you fancy the idea of playing some golf on your self-catering break, Bentham Golf Club is just 3 miles from Ingleton and has an 18-hole course nicknamed the ‘Augusta of the Dales’. When you see it, you’ll know why. This attractive course contains no fewer than seven ponds. Visitors are warmly welcomed and there is a restaurant and specialist golf shop.

So, come to Ingleton for lots of outdoor activities and the opportunity to see the very best that the Yorkshire Dales has to offer. The sun may not shine all the time, but changing weather and changing seasons only adds to its allure.
