Minehead is West Somerset’s premier coastal resort with all you’d expect for a traditional English seaside holiday. For generations children have been building sandcastles on the long sandy beach, swimming and playing safely in the sea water. Couples old and young have strolled down the flower festooned promenade, taking in the sights and stopping for a snack in one of the beachside cafes. While the pier has long gone and the knotted hankies replaced by baseball caps, the deckchairs, the ice cream, lifeboat station and harbour are still there. Familiar seaside attractions abound both day and night and there’s something for all ages to enjoy on a self-catering break.
About Self-Catering Holidays in Minehead
Dominating the town, as it has done for centuries, is North Hill from where Minehead gets its name. It is on this hill that
Exmoor National Park begins and ends. A leaflet guide of the 3 mile circular walk around the town which takes in numerous historical landmarks is available either online or from the Tourist Information Office. You can also pick up various free leaflets on local attractions at the Tourist Information Office as well as getting objective advice from helpful staff. If walking is to your liking you should also walk the West Somerset Coast path, maybe as far as Watchet for some stunning views of the coastline.
Wonderful views and more can be enjoyed in some style if you take a trip on the West Somerset Railway. Both steam and classic diesel trains operate from Minehead to Watchet and continue inland through the Quantock Hills to Bishops Lydeard. The company runs special excursions and themed trips as well as scheduled journeys. These include a pie and a pint lunchtime special, a steam and cream special, a fish and chip special and a first class dining experience. Re-enact Murder on the Orient Express and take part in the Murder Mystery special or take the kids to meet Fireman Sam, Peppa Pig or Thomas and friends plus the fat controller. Dates of these excursions are to be found on the West Somerset Railway’s website.
During a cottage holiday in Minehead it’s just a short easy drive in to the naturally beautiful green landscapes of Exmoor. But if you prefer something more strenuous then venture deeper onto the moor. Cycling, hiking and horse riding are just some of the activities available in this expanse of moorland, sprinkled with delightful villages, pubs and restaurants.
